Are you feeling activated? Are you in danger of losing your temper, panicking, or crying? While it’s important to feel your emotions, sometimes you need to regulate your emotions and get them under control. Need a trick to calm down fast? Try this!
The good news is that you can do this anywhere. It combines your typical deep breathing exercise with a handy visual to help ground you and reset your aggravated nervous system. In under two minutes, you’ll be ready to handle your business and tackle whatever needs to be done.
We searched high and low for the kind of help that might help NOW, instead of stuff that takes a lot of practice. Of COURSE it is important to continue to practice other coping skills as well, but being able to stop panic (even for a little while) in its tracks is an invaluable tool. So, we found this video above for you from Youtubber Rachel Richards, and we think it is pretty cool.
Just a quick word of warning: if you’re driving, you won’t be able to do this. Try this instead:
- Smile–even if traffic is stressing you out. It could help you see the humor in it, or it could help you “fake it til you make it”.
- Use the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Inhale for a count of 4, hold it for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds.
- Listen to your favorite playlist or podcast.
- Tune into an audio book.
Ah! That’s better! Now you can keep calm and carry on!
